A Question Brought On By Newton Coincidentally

A Question Brought On By Newton Coincidentally
By Gregory Shields

If a tree falls in the woods with no one around to hear it, does it make a sound?

This is a question that is often argued over for hours between my friends and I so I am writing this to answer it once and for all.

The dicitionary describes the word sound as "vibrations transmitted through an elastic solid or a liquid or gas, with frequencies in the approximate range of 20 to 20,000 hertz, capable of being detected by human organs of hearing." If this is the case then a person is not required for a sound to be made, only something that causes vibrations with frequencies in the range of 20 to 20,000 herts. A tree that falls in an area with a person close enough to hear makes a sound, so one would percieve a tree of being capable of creating sound as a constant because if it could make vibrations once, it will always be able to.

If this is true then a tree that falls in the woods with no one around to hear it will absolutely make a sound. The only way that a tree could fall without making a sound would be if it was in the vacuum of space where there is no significant amount of gas to create vibrations in which to make a sound.

That is my final answer. If there is anyone with an arguement to my answer then I would gladly listen to it. Just make sure that you are not a falling tree so I can hear it.

Your lucky to have free time, I wish I had some free time to just orginize what I'm doing instead of making so many mistakes... oh well, I have no place to argue about this subject. I'm a artist not a scientist... heh.

I find my sitiuation funny in an ironic way. I'm more than just a intellectual, theoligist, artist, writer, musician. I am full of so many interest and yet nothing apeals to me and nothing happens. I sit around all day doing nothing. This is my only intellectual release.
